The Pyrénées-Orientale region of southern France is a
land with many different themes running throughout its long history. To
many, its name invokes merely the Pyrénées, yet it is the Fenouillet
range that are in this region and not the Pyrénées themselves. In fact,
the region is more hilly than mountainous and is home both to the
hilltop castles of the Cathar period and to the Mediterranean beaches
ranging from Canet Plage near Perpignan to Banyuls-sur-Mer close to the
border with Spain.Our day-trip guide
lists a short selection of tours which will give you a flavour of the
region but if you want to choose from a more extensive range of options,
the options on the menu to your left gives quite a comprehensive
introduction to the places and activities in and around the region.
There are events and festivals
throughout most of the year and if you've a particular interest in one
of them it's best to book accommodation and flights well in advance to
be sure of getting somewhere to stay; you can book accommodation through
our partners Chambre d'Hote and
Our Gites and travel via our
sister site
which offers the cheapest car hire available along with flights,
insurance, guides, etc.
